Well no actually you can't, because the car will still be in the previous owners name.
The tax system is online, but the car ownership system is still paper.
You buy a car and fill in the transfer papers, but it takes a week or two to make the round trip to the DVLA and for their records to be updated.
If tax is not transferable how can you tax the car in the mean time??
