Restoring a 206GTI gearknob?

I fancy one of these after my leather one has been worn through.
How easy do you think the aluminum would be to restore?
Not to a perfect finish but it to make it certainly less crusty looking.

1500-2000 grit wet and dry and then autosol?
Paint the numbers back in at the top after the polishing stage?
