Only just seen this:
The chances are that the metal will be oxidised through the thickness of it. To repair it, would require cutting out, and with it being that close to the windscreen, putting a new bit in would require the screen coming out. Hence the £500 tag that came from the garage.
Of course, it could not be as serious as that, and hopefully it won't be. The only way to tell is to have a dig around
