I'd disagree totally. Obviously a proper DSLR is better but cost at least twice as much, nobody keeps a camera with them "just in case" these days as we all have mobile phones with good cameras so if your taking a camera out its not too much of a problem if it big. I can fit my Finepix in my pockets anyway. Compacts tend to be little better than mobile phone cameras.
You also get a substantial optical zoom (30x on mine and a good range of adjustability, certainly enough to be able to shoot in almost pitch blackness and also do light painting with.
For the OP try and make sure you get something you can screw a tripod into the bottom of as that makes a big difference, no more worries about shaky hands especially with longer exposures and a £10 ebay tripod is fine for most situations.
