You say that, but even Hamilton and Newey spannered their own cars at one point...still do...
If you want to get into a race firm through design side only, you're better off finding someone that has a road side (Ford, Lotus and BMW are pretty good for this), as they'll want you on a design team there before they'll let you move over to the motorsport side of things usually (because you're not watched over as much with far less staff)
