Veg usually burns a whitish grey, Diesel burns black.
Veg registers alot lower in emissions as it's seen as being much less dense smoke.

Mine often reads really high on the first pass, then subsequent readings are much lower.

Always a good idea to give it an Italian Tune-up on the way to the test
