Sorry but i cant agree with that. My cousins boyfriend works for british gas as an apprentice and they have messed him about big time. Money is crap, its not actually a proper apprenticeship (there is no formal qualification at the end of it, just a BG one), You sign into a contract agreeing that you will stay for several years afterwards otherwise you owe them the cost of the apprenticeship (about 8k and i know this is true because they told me this when i applied for a apprenticeship with them) and finally, there is no guarantee afterwards of a proper full time job.
Apprenticeships are great but after spending many hours applying for all of them with the big names a few years back, they all had their own tie ins which i personally dont like (like for instance i was offered a assessment day at Siemens working on trains....shame the apprenticeship was based mainly in Birmingham and Germany!)
Go down to your local college and see what they have. Thats your best bet. Or, if your extremely lucky, get a job as a trainee with a company who will put you through college. Thats what ive done and got the best of both worlds. not on an apprentice wage (minimum wage for apprentices is less than £3P/H) but when i finish my course in April, will be fully certified by city and guilds, FIA and BAFE.
Edit: Shame you dont live in Birmingham. We have my old job going there at the moment lol.
