and because its very rare to 'cruise' at 30mph on a flat, you end up changing gear frequently, which makes the 5th gear 30mph idea pointless. it also means you cant get outa trouble quick!

Actually, it's partly true but it depends in what situations you do it. If you're cruising on a flat road at 30 in 5th then great, but if you're trying to speed up or going up a hill it's a waste and you will use more fuel. Only go into the highest gear you can for the type of driving you're doing for the road you're on and the speed.
I know this to be true because my current car has a MPG display which is spot on (calculated manually many times) and it shows this to be true.
