Ha, reminds me of myself at your age, spending a year learning to weld on a seriously rotten 1600 Capri. When I passed my test it turned out the insurance was £5300, so I chopped it in and bought a Fiat Uno, and still paid £1800!
If it makes you feel any better, it does get cheaper, I got quoted £315 for a 190E today, but it has taken 8 years...
