To be honest, as an employee at the garage it's up to you to do what the gaffer says. If he doesn't tell the customer that then it's not really your problem, as long as the car works you've done your job.

Still, i'd have considered walking pretty quickly if that's the way he treats customers. You're not being dishonest but the business certainly is.
