I just actually read that page from the haynes manual - it is correct, but dont mix up the valve cutouts on the HDi piston with the pre-cup cloverleafs of the XUD, they both have entirely diffrent purposes, and happen to be located on opposite sides of the pistons, hence being opposite to XUD on the HDi and vice versa in the haynes.
Irrelevant of engine/pistons in use, the notches for the upper shell should be at the front, as said in the haynes.
