The whole point is the split personality with a Diesel - don't be on the throttle = 55mpg, on the throttle = 30mpg... Not rocket science...
It's wanky highly tuned NA petrols that consume ungodly amounts of fuel just sat cruising on the motorway because they've got so much valve overlap they're blowing 30% of the mixture out the exhaust on every stroke...
Only time this will change will be when petrols end up working on nigh on the Compression ignition cycle... The latest petrols coming out are starting to run ultra lean burn principles at part throttle, but still when you go to WOT, you're talking 13:1 or even 12:1... A diesel is running at 17:1 for something that's tuned, an OEM engine will be probably running at in excess of 20:1 without EGR in the mix!
