Wing mirrors

Taken my wing mirrors off as want to spray glass black, how do I take the actual mirror etc out of the unit so don't get paint on the mirror? Also, the guy before me got a stick on mirror as the one before had smashed, put on the broken glass, not straight or anything. Any ways of taking it off so can put another on properly? Thanks
