I can sort of see his reasoning.
With a baby on the way I need something which is 100% reliable and easy to fix. The way I see it, a HDi is absent of a DMF and is far simpler, plus cheaper to insure. The Ford is great, but parts aren't as cheap as people make out! A servicing kit (filters, no oil) is £64 odd, plus VAT. Genuine filters obviously, but that still seemed steep!
