Help Improve 306oc
#1
Hi All,

I think we have all noticed that the forum has been in a bit of a lull recently however that does seem to be picking up now that we have come out of winter. My question to all of you is what do you think we can do to improve the forum and participation of its members. When I say "we" i mean all of us, not just the staff.

My personal thoughts on the recent decline in activity, apart from being winter, is that Facebook is a great place for people to ask questions and get answers and its super quick to do anything. People dont necessarily need or understand the benefits of a forum and having a project thread etc. You only have to look at Peugeot Enthusiasts Group or South West French Cars to see how large those groups are. I believe that people use FB as a means of finding communities now not google. For example we told one person not to sell on the facebook group and to visit the forum... his reply... "i didnt know there was a forum"! Well... its called 306oc.co.uk so go figure...

I would like to think that all of our members actually on this forum do see the benefits and enjoy the community that we do have and have built up after many many years. The other answer is that numbers of 306s are declining and we are seeing less people having them as their first car etc and its maturing more into a classic. Many of our members here dont even have 306s but do enjoy the community.

We have already discussed how we can improve things in the staff section and there should be some rolling road and regional meets coming up this summer. We then of course have FCS, Pugfest, PFC Expo, Forge Action Day and the Christmas meet so we are doing okay in terms of nationals meets.

One long term idea was to open the forum up to all retro peugeots. Personally Im not sure how this would work when 106oc and 205 forums are so strong.

Please post your comments and observations below or PM them to me.

Need a tag feature for sure, like on FB you can @Eeyore . I've seen it on other forums, don't see why we can't do it. Also some sort of notification feature e.g. when someone quotes you or hits thanks. Without having to check emails. Just a little icon in the top right/left corner with a drop down.

I like it havnt been here long as most but got all my info from here. Personally i think facebook should be "used" like the couch discussion for other people.
Tag feature for sure.

As I've said in the staff section, we need to spend a bit of time on FB diverting people to the forum, linking cool projects and useful articles etc, FB is full of fcuking idiots that to be honest we don't want on here, however, there's plenty that need to be made aware of the value of the forum Imo Smile

Facebook taking over forums isn't anything new. I was talking to a guy at a DubGen meet back in 2012 and asked what his forum name was...he didn't know there was a forum, and I didn't know there was a facebook group lol... lol

I'm not really sure what can be done, there aren't many major or regular projects any more but that should pick up during summer, and all of the common questions have been asked so many times that even the search function is useful now.

What we need is a few mad builds going on link them to facebook and have an iq test to actually join the forum?

If we want to just get more people here we just need to re name the forum.

Pornn hub, Porn hubb, Ponr hub or something similar should increase the traffic.

Track days..

I've recently joined RSUK and they have just done their first track day; £90 for full day per car including breakfast and dinner. Up to 30 members.

There're fair few tracks that would give you the track for the day and fairly cheap to pay for.

Open it up to non-members after a certain deadline. Would increase member numbers and club awareness

As said above, Facebook taking over forums is nothing new, and I can't see that changing.

However, the quality of posts, threads & information on this forum is mostly a lot higher than that of Facebook which is why I'm keen for little to change & why I'm sticking around Smile

not seen much need for changes. all the q&a's passed through here have been very informative. And the sales & wanted are also good.

Start a club kitty and do a funded UK wide tour once a year taking in track days or meets at known popular tracks
all the way up to Scotland??
Open up a PSA group cars section to attract more ZX / Xsara / Saxo owners to expand the member base!
You could even buy my dads camper stick a big engine in and splash some OC livery all over it for the oficial tour bus lol. @Niall could donate his 6 as the official OC club car and trailer it about behind the bus Tongue

Thing is - we don't want to be known for our Q&As and For Sale threads...

That's why we have 8,065 members and 581,293 posts.

- The top 20 posters make up for 197,620 of the total posts.

- That's a THIRD of all posts ever from 20 people!

- That means that the remaining 8,045 members make up for a total of 383,673 posts which is an average of 47 posts per user.

If you were to take the top 40 posters, I guarantee the results would be even more shocking. 99% of the people who sign up the forum are out to take and give nothing - I appreciate you will *always* have that, but it's always felt to me like this forum is particularly skewed.

That's just the joys of the subject of the forum becoming cheaper and less desirable as time goes on and it's very much now a cheap hack about - there's only a handful of cars on here people genuinely give a crap about... The rest are just the cheapy daily and will be run into the floor and scrapped.

I also just for interest had a look - if you sort by post count descending:

That's 321 pages out of 404 at 20 posts per page, so roughly 6420 members with less than five posts!

I think part of the issue is atm 306s are where 205s were 10 years ago when i sarted in the trade. Teu were disposible cars at the end of the day. Christ my current car cost me 34 quid!! Thats nothing. Its cheaper for me to buy another car than a wheel bearing atm. Very few 306s are going up in value and therefore up in appriciation of people, unless like me youve been linked with them since i got a lisence

It has been very quiet recently. Horrible even, I removed the days of come home from work to see 4 full pages!

I think maybe having giveaways would be a cool way to bring some members in.
Raffles etc

Or maybe just more promotion in Facebook, links to project threads.

Or maybe the love for the 306 is just dying?

I don't think much if anything needs to change really, It's always going to have quiet periods like you say epically through winter when most don't have the motivation to work on their car. 306s are aging and slowing dying out, it goes to show that a few don't even have 306s anymore but are still keen to stick around which is a good thing IMO. Compare this forum to .net as i don't think a lot seems to go on over there and club306 packed it all in.

Its great to still have this forum going as there is so much useful info etc and a lot of great people on here. Im sure the forum will pick up in the next few coming weeks.

Would be good to sort out more local meets like i have tried but they just don't seem to have overly much interest and i consider the area round me to have quite a few members.

Personally feel not a whole heap needs to change, winter has gone so projects will startup again soon.
all the major shows are great but more meets and track days for us only are the way other clubs do it.
Then getting those to turn up to actually turn up would be good, no idea how you do that.
give it 10 kore years and our cars will be rarer and a little kore desirable, then things will grow.
Cheap club track sessions is my main request.
cheers

Its a tough one, it could do with a fresh look mind. As the forum skin looks a bit dated, .net had a nice skin.
maybe start looking at a register for some of the rarer models now and even start looking at where to get hard to find parts too, if there are any.
Also remember this, that the 306 is now going into the territory of classic car status, so it might be worth trying to save as many. The phase 1/ and gtis spring to mind,

What the metro owners club did was use the facebook group as a place for photos and info on up coming events. Everything else is pushed on to the forum. Also the group is set to private too,
Also try and get the club pushed into mags and papers too!
We could have done a one, what the metro owners club did, and that was get as many as possible for the metros 20th and 30th birthday. But I think we missed out on that one, as that would have really pushed things too!
It wont be as busy now as it used to be, due to the age and the a mount of cars that are on the road.
You got ask what is the club about now? modding a 306? keeping as many on the road etc?
Something we should really have addressed,
The metro scene I can tell you has changed, from modding to keeping as many on the road as possible!

Club track sessions ftw. I think an actual stand on the stand at shows would help, always having a club rep or two on duty. People will stop and browse a stand briefly if it catches their eye, having reps on hand to chat just opens it up a bit more. And as a serious bonus it gives the club a public face that isn't just the hell we raised the night before lol.

But who will drive the forklift to get the cars up on their stands @Vaughn

Before I read the rest of the posts, do we really want some of the barely literate retards that facebook attracts, posting on here?

I really don't want this place to turn into somewhere that has 'mate' and text speak in a large number of posts.

I did the maths cos I wanted to know.
Members 21-40 (by post count) totals just shy of 90,000 (89,5somethingsomething)

It means the top forty have 287,000 posts which is over half of the forum made by less than half of one percent of the members
