Fun and good on fuel. Those two words can't really Co-exist haha
You could pick up a 205 for that kind of money, probably not a 1.9 gti, but certainly a decent 1.6 or another model like an xs or something All 205 no matter what engine are fun to drive and most of them are eligible for classic insurance now :-D You can also pick up a pretty nicely specced Saxo vts for less than £800, if the pedals annoy you, just bend them into a better position ;-)

To be honest, if you want fun and good on fuel, a tuned DT or mapped HDI is what you want...

323i aren't bad with a little work done to them, they were deliberately restricted to 170hp and are near enough identical to the 325, swap the inlet mani and you'll see near enough 25+hp

Xsara vts are very under rated and under valued,should be able to pick up a nice one for £800
