Any mechanics around NW London?
#1
I've seen a nice 306 going cheap in NW London, that's currently a non-starter and the seller hasn't bothered to find out why- instead he's just selling up. I'd be interested to view it and find out exactly what is wrong, but obviously don't have any experience.

So, anyone who may know/ could work out from looking at the engine why it broke down 2 weeks ago and won't start? I'll pay in beer and bacon sarnies Smile

I say go for it, if you can get a decent price (I'm talking <£250).

It's always hard to say with these things, on one hand I wouldn't necessarily take the sellers word for it that they "haven't bothered to find out why", on the other hand it could be a simple fix somewhere.

Worst case scenario is you break it and weigh it in, make sure you can't lose money though.

Well, I asked some questions and this was the response....

I'm not totally sure what the problem is.
The car started running a little strangely a couple of months back, I took it to the garage and they replaced the alternator, but it didn't fix the problem, and it's got progressively worse.A light on the dash came up when it was struggling to start the other morning which is the 'Engine Auto Diagnostic Light'.
It's just parked outside my house, so I got a guy from Green Flag to come out and look at it, he said he thought one of the sensors had gone, but couldn't fix it. So I then got a mobile mechanic to look at it, and he seemed to think there may be something wrong with the Engine Management System but wasn't sure until he started working on it at a cost... And to be honest after just paying £400 on an alternator a couple of months back and also pay for this guys call out charge, I'm just going to cut my losses.
It might be something simple to fix, I'm not sure. Everything else was and has been working 100% fine until now.

Any insight to the problem from anyone?

It's a 6 btw Wink

i paid £450 for an alt in my DT on xmas even at kwikfit when i was desperate, so yeah those prices do exist.

Although, it could be an ECU fault, you'd need a proper code reader to find out what the error is. Shouldnt be too hard to fix if its a sensor, as unless its anything other than a snapped cambelt it shouldnt be too serious?

Agreed, it does sound like it could be a sensor.

My money is on the throttle potentiometer ninja

What would be the plan on it?? Would you be able to get it home or try and fix it at the side of the road??

I guess another 6 on hand would help.. ive got a fully unlocked ecu on the dimma which might help..

I guess it would be more of a project car, although tbh I don't really have anywhere to keep it. It's just in really good condition for the price (current issue aside). Obviously if it's going to cost a lot/be a pain in the arse to fix I won't bother.

If it is simple, then yeah, I'll try and get it home and fix it one weekend Smile

Or just stick a 3.0 V6 in it ninja

Sadly there is more to fit / work out than just having the engine

New ecu. Doubt it's that. That's more a 1.8 issue due to poor wiring

I dont see why we couldnt get it running, depends on how many spare sensors we can borrow off your car to test on the new car to see if it makes it run.

Yes!
Need to be careful of diagnosing it in front of him though otherwise he could just refuse to sell it and bump the price up if it's a easy fix!

Why do you want it anyway?
