After the summer i'm considering selling up the megane. It's been incredible and will see me through the summer.
Question is, next car...
I'm thinking of something a little more sensible, but still a little unique. My options are:
BMW 123d - OR 135i.
Volvo S40 T5
I have a realistic budget of ~£7k, but happy to keep some change from that.
I then started looking at SUV's and thought along the lines of
Mspot X3
XC90 D5
Any more ideas would be great.

Get the V50 T5, try to get the AWD.. spot on..
XC70 is a better shout than the XC90, same drivetrain as the V70, with a little more robustness and suprisingly nimble around corners..
i like volvos.. but in the interest of this forum
306 rallye, GTi 6 or HDi wagon.. sorted

I've driven my brothers V50, and as nice as they are, I don't think I'd like an estate. Same goes for the XC70.
I was also considering a 207 hdi/gti ..

Ive been considering one of these but in a specific spec...
If i had one it would have to be:
Manual
Blue
fully loaded
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-N-AUDI-S4...SwX~dWixDx
Still an incredibly capable car, 4wd and V8 sets it apart from the M3 nicely i think and with clsoe too 340bhp on tap with shed loads of torque (plus that v8 noise, just youtube a miltek de-res system on a B6 S4 ) it should peddle along nicely!
Edit: just watch this

"Sensible, but unique"
"1-series, X3, XC90..."
This is clearly some new use of the words sensible and unique with which i'm not familiar, but i'll try and work with it, think i've got a few ideas:
Honda HRV
Audi A4 S-line
Toyota Rav4
Or if you're feeling really wild, how about a Nissan Qashqai?

Wrong end of the stick mate, he went for the 'depreciation and shit on fuel' theme rather than the 'mentally deranged' category!! I can however understand how those may cross in a Venn diagram...

Nothing listed above is unique.
Buy a Bentley Turbo R, it's within your price and fuel economy range, it's bastard fast and I bet you can get laid with it.

I'm not looking for a completely unique car, hence "little unique", i'm not for a common road car
123d and 135i coupes ... not the most common car on the road? Correct me if i'm wrong?
s40 T5 again, I've not seen one, and according to the online database, only a couple hundred left in the country?
As for the XC90, separate from the initial post, I began looking at SUV's, those two were in for potentials.
But thanks for your handy input.
How's the HDI?

WUT!?
You get one person making a very obvious joke and you get upset.
My suggestion was entirely genuine, trust me if I was in the market for £7k for something a bit different and 5mpg I'd own a Bentley and most of the others seem to fit the brief perfectly too.

Do you really need a car as big as a XC90? You could fit Greece's debt in one of them things. Maybe look at a XC60 and you'll probably get a bit more for your money?

I've looked for polestars but they're extremely hard to get hold of!
Would love one.

Mazda RX-8? Then you can tell me what they are like
£7k would pick you up a fairly decent one. My research tells me to buy from a specialist as they do compression tests.

My bad, no offence meant. And you're right, i don't see many 135is on the road, can't say the same for any of the rest around here though. For what it's worth, i'd advise against anything m-sport beyond a bodykit, they're bloody uncomfortable, which on an suv seems a bit backwards since it'll never handle. Although they do scream "no sense of humour", so perhaps they're ideal.
Edit: (That was also a joke, admittedly at your expense, but still just a joke. )

Having driven a 135 when they were released, I have to say they're a very rapid vehicle (absolutely ballistic with a map). Only thing is i'm sure they're only available in the coupe shape (Noddy Car) rather than the more practical hatch (albeit with a ridiculously sized boot). I believe there are issues with the fueling system on them though, so what about a 130i instead? Straight forward 3ltr 265bhp engine, with the added practicality of a hatch.
Chassis wise, I had an M-Sport specced 120d and never had an issue with it. No worse than any other 'Sport' suspension model now available from all manufacturers (Ever tried an Audi S Line? Now that is a harsh ride!). I always thought it was a very capable car, yes a bit crashy over rough stuff but makes up for it when the going gets better.
