Pah, want to go a bit faster? buy a 206 180 and be done with it.

Just prepare for electrical faults, exhaust problems, gear shift failure, overpriced parts, shit ergonomics and a good amount of piss taking from your friends in the process.

As i was unwilling to fork out for mods, I've decided to badge it as an Xsi. So people are even more impressed with the reasonable turn of speed Big Grin

V6 is a good swap for instant 210bhp but there isn't much tuning potential beyond that without large outlay.

I'll go low boost eventually as 240bhp and just over 1100kg will keep me up with all the vxr stuff and focus st etc which is all we get around here.

Why would anyone throw that sort of money at a 306 when you could just buy a renaultsport megane for circa 3k, have it mapped / modded (+ £600) too 280bhp and have an epicically fun car to drive / own thats going to really anihilate most vxr's / ST's etc in a straight line and definitely destroy them through the bends?

Because they don't want a Renault Megane or a VXR? I sure as hell don't, I fully appreciate people wanting one, but they're not for everyone...

Having driven an R26 for an extended period and seriously considered buying one and having a few good drives in a Mk5 GTi and a VXR I ended up not buying one and sticking with a 306... They're OK etc but found them a bit dull to drive unless you were flat out doing way in excess of the speed limit...

Horses for courses!!

I understand they arent for everyone, life would be exceedingly boring is everyone drove one! lol

I was meaning from a value for money only perspective.

Dont get me wrong, i love my rallye too pieces. No megane could make me smile like it i doubt. But if i had 3-4k and wanted the most bang for my buck... thats where i would be looking to buy.

3k wouldn't get you a decent one surely? And it's not plain forward map to 270 you have to change the bottom rod bolts for Arp ones and that sure ain't cheap Tongue

Can pick a half decent 225 up for 2k+

And like i said its map AND supporting mods (exhaust / induction kit / BOV) but you dont need to change any internals to map it straight to 280bhp. With that and double wishbone front suspension & brembos as standard whats not to love? Only thing you dont get in a 225 is a LSD but you still wouldnt have one of those in a 3k 306 most likely :lol

According to the megane sport forum they dont need any internal modification to run a 280bhp map.

It's only ever down to personal preference. If i had 3k, i'd prefer to build something old than buy something new.

He's right too, I'd be amazed to see any XUD keep up with most petrol hot hatches on track.

I wasn't saying on track. That's a different story.

But in a straight line, you'd be surprised by what a well tuned XUD can do. Or is it just a NO NO because the Gods on this forum say otherwise?

Not at all. The Stage 2 HDi drive is faster than a friends Clio 172, but it would get anihalated by an Astra VXR. Same for the higher tuned 306's too.

It's old tech now, very torquey and good for what it is, but not really a match for a modern turbocharged hot hatch.

^^ This..

Even the best XUD's on here are what, sub 250hp? (Don't get me wrong, that's impressive) But either of those cars with just a remap alone would be substantially more powerful.. Comparing a highly tuned car to a stock one isn't exactly a great comparison either though

The Megane 225 isn't a bad car at all, in fact it's very good, but I'd have a '6 or Rallye anyday. Yes, the Megane corners far faster, goes far faster, has far more comforts and a great gearbox, but it feels dead compared to a 306. The 306 feels lively, and you can feel its limits easier, the Megane gives you very little warning. The Megane would destroy a '6 round a track or on the road but since when is fun all about outright pace? The 306 is far more fun, and that's what interests me.

Thing I always say to such owners of such cars is...

Anyone can buy a fast car and drive it like a looney.

Not everyone can build a fast car and drive it like a stig!
