well as Tom has got a GTI6 had to go one better
so i have now spur of the moment purchased another 6 for myself
my idea was to break it to keep my two 306 in parts but i think its to good for that
i may save it and sell it on, but still undecided untill i get it home and look under it properly
good bits
straight clean shell
w reg Ph3
has a rebuilt top end
toyo proxys all round
after market exhust
other than that it is a std car
started first time after more than 12months
bad bits
been stood for over 12 months
has a knock in one big end
but was layed up as soon as it happened
what do you recon its worth?
1, as is?
2, with new shells,cambelt and 12 month MOT?

Hmm, Chris, JJ, now you...everyones buying cars, I'm feeling inadequate! 
Big end knock is such a shame though, won't be worth much at all like that. I would imagine around a grand with MOT and a decent engine though. Depending on service history and mileage etc.

IF you can get away with just putting a set of shells in it, you can have that fixed in less than an hour. If it's got a rebuilt head, I'd imagine it will be a snapper which will be why the bottom end has gone.

why are the bottom ends likely to go after being a snapper?

It's easy. Jack car up, sump off, plate off, oil pump off, remove big ends and replace, retorque (important bit lol) and put back together.

Lots of things are easy in theory...its NEVER that easy in practice!
An hour has probably gone in the time its taken to find the tools, position the car, jack it up and drop the sump.

on ramps
drop oil
drop sump
remove oil pump
remove windage plate
unbolt caps
remove shells
hardest part is cleaning the gasket faces and working while on your back

I didn't say it was hard, just don't see it being that quick!
Working on your back is the worst part, everything feels heavier and takes more effort lol, not to mention you'll be getting oil dripped on your head.

It's worth scrap money as a complete car IMO. I can virtually guarantee you won't get away with replacing the shells, do you not agree Niall?!

I wouldn't want to say yes or no for certain without seeing the extent of the damage but the chances of you not having to have the crank out is very slim. You never know though, stranger things happen!!

Seriously, if the big ends have failed, putting in new shells without doing something that will stop it happening again, I can only see it happening again and again! You could spend a fortune on bits for it and be left in the same situation.
I've got a spare GTi6 motor on 105k or so, bits like manifold, alternator/pas pump missing off it, but it is an entire motor, not a snapper, one out of my old car, needs a belt replacement and probably a bit of a clean, but it's a super tidy motor underneath if you are interested.

It's missing a few parts but never got fully into the strip down so it's currently still sat in the shed
