Only nice thing about the 307 is better on motorway. Higher gearing

306. All day, any day.

wonder what they'd say on the 307 forum if there is one
Phase 1 D-Turdo, K14@24 psi, De-cat, meaty backbox, Bosch pump, grinded LDA pin, duel air fed K&N =133.7bhp & 188ft/lbs

306 is probably more reliable. So I understand, the early 307s had all sorts of issues

I know what you guys are saying, obviously the choice would be a 306 as we are on a 306 forum lol
If you can get a 90bhp Bosch 307 hdi it is much better as you have no dpf in the exhaust that gets blocked up and essentially have to get mapped out. Also the 90bhp doesnt have a dual mass flywheel to fail.
And the bosch fuel system seems to suffer less from high pressure pump failure than the bosch system which is used in all 306 hdi's. The 110bhp will have these issues at some point so id get a 90bhp and get it mapped by pro steve to a nice 125-130bhp. But yes the 307 has more electrical gremlins too, bsi problems for example if it gets a spike which is just a farse really.

I kind of like the look of the 307, even the interior
Think the someone said the seats are more comfy in the 7 too

307 is heavy, ugly and plagued with issues...and doesnt handle like the 306
Wishes for more power...

If your step dad isn't a car person I'd go for the 307. The small HDis are cheap on everything and the bigger ones are no slouches. Its a newer more modern car with more toys, arguably better looks and its probably easier getting parts.
As said, if you have the time to search then an early 90 hdi is the one to seek out. Build quality isn't amazing but you have to consider the 307 was developed / designed nearly 10 years after the first 306, so it's a lot more 'plush'. Quieter, more refined and they do generate a lot of grip, they're just not very fun to drive. They're also f*ck-ugly but I could happily settle for one with the basic 2.0 hdi engine in that nice blue colour (azure? Iirc)
Disclaimer: The above is not to be taken to heart and is probably a joke, grow up you big girl.
