Recharging a cone air filter

Recharging a cone air filter

Hi I bought an aftermarket cone air filter, I have left it in a bowl of boiling water with a dissolved dishwasher tablet and bloody hell the waters black !!!! I will recleanse it with just boiling hot water and leave it to dry.

The question is what can I use on the filter to recharge it so dust particles stick to the it, should I buy a k&n recharge kit or is there anything better or just as good that wont cost the earth??

id use wd40, or some other light spray oil, just gunna do the same thing

It was the word "grease" i instantly thought way too thick and thought about wd40 but I've never recharged a filter before so thought I'd ask before fudging it up lol

Id just plug it in overnight did you not get a charger with it? Can buy one with different voltages and ends from Argos

wd40 evaperates off so is no good as it wont retain the dust once gone
id go with 3-in-1 spray oil for a cheap option
on 4 or two stoke stuff we used to oil the filters with the two stroke oil that we mixed in the tank
but the propper filter oil is not that expensive

yes but it has got to stay wet and not dry out
as the idea is to catch the particles by sticking to the oil

oh and hdis dont like oil in there MAF sensor as it coats the sensor giving false/slow reacting readings

But the oil stops it getting through as it sticks to it...I can't be bothered really but I best do it, with my luck it would kill my car without it lol

foam air filters used to be soaked in ordinary engine oil before fitting....................................??

when was completing my apprenticeship (moons ago), in the early 80's original vw beetles still coming into dealership for servicing used oil bath type air filters........

Gonna revive this thread rather than starting a new one. The cone filter i have is filthy, but i don't have any dishwasher tablets to dissolve in a bucket of water, so does anyone have any better suggestions?

Fella, I cleaned my filter in a bowl with a. Dishwasher tab in and then rinsed 4 times

Then I painted engine oil on to the filter with a paintbrush and all is well

Cost me £2 in total and the filter is like new Smile

How long did you soak the filter in the bowl with the tablet? Managed to find one, and the filter is now in the bowl.

Defiltered is FTW tbh, but i will be reinstating the original pipework again over the winter months, same as i did last year. Hence im now cleaning the cone filter. Tongue

If you kill the turbo because its defiltered, it just makes for a good excuse to put a bigger turbo on! lol
