hdi will not start help

I just bought a hdi on a V reg, with a suspeted fuel pump problem. So i got a fuel pump of a 406 hdi, now theres no fuel coming out of the pump to the injecters, But theres fuel to the pump.
Can anybody help?

Did the previous owner explain what the symptoms were and how the car stopped working? Ie was it a steady decline, did it happen at random, was it ok again if you turned the ignition off and back on again etc?
