		http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/CAR50/Whats...-50-years/
heres a list of 50 cars that car magazine reades have submitted to be voted for.

i'm finding it hard to choose just one!

So many cars on that list are epic in their own way but are not "greater" then the next one.

		205 GTi IMHO...

VW started the idea off of the Hot Hatch/GTi... Peugeot did really make the best... It really was the first HOT FWD GTi/Hatch that was properly quick, it brought proper handling and (relatively...) decent power outputs to the masses...

Nothing else will compare IMHO.

Still today a 1.9 GTi is NOT a slow car by any stretch of the imagniation... Find a set of twisties and unless you're in very expensive machinery, not much will compare on a fun factor...

Think you'll find the Renault 5 Gordini predates the golf Gti by 2 months so the French started the scene - not the Germans with their 'people's cars'

As much as I love the 205, had to be the e-type. Still a beautiful car and still will spank most things on the road....when its not broken in true British style!

It's not that much of a icon. The 205 is what really started the hot hatch.

Yes the Renault was the first hot hatch, however, I think my point more was, the VW was what made the GTi popular... Not necessarily the first...

There were MP3 players before the iPod, the iPod was what popularised it...

You think of a GTi, you generally think Golf GTi..

Also, could never put the Defender in there... They get away with making things shit by claiming it makes them good off road and more reliable, which is total bullshit... You can make a vehicle good offroad by giving it a proper driving position, a decent seat, proper insulation etc... Not making doors that fall off their hinges and leak like a sieve and just claim it makes the vehicle better off road... Land Rover have been milking it since 1948 as an excuse to build shit vehicles...

There's just Land Rover purists out there that claim it makes them a better off road vehicle by simple engineering, when there's an engine out of a Ford Mondeo up front with a DPF and all the shit that goes with - so all the parts you want to be simple are complex, yet the doors still leak, the only room for your elbow is out the window, the doors still fall off their hinges, they still have chronic road noise, wind noise, whistles... They just can't be arsed to make a new off roader that's any good...

A2, multipla and fortwo are all production cars that were way before their time.

Don't know why the TT's on there though, it's just a f*ck-ugly golf with crap rear seats/boot-space. And the BMW mini? GTFO.

First affordable sports car with a straight 6 up front, RWD and stunning looks. I want one.

My vote goes on the Golf GTI mk1. Yes, the 205 GTI is slightly better to drive and a bit quicker, but the Golf is far better built, more comfortable, more reliable. It's bloody close though, and if we're on about what we'd buy now I'd rather spend 2 grand on a nice 205 than double that on a Golf
