Best way to tell:
Phase 1 is obvious as it has a very different front end.
Phase 2 i can tell by either reg or bumpers and good one is Frosted headlamps and fogs (phase 2 GTI-6's have Phase 3 bits)
Phase 3 has crystal head lamps and fogs
Phase 4 just dont really exist :L
The above is my opinion in telling tbh.
