What might be the most likely cause of a creaking noise coming from my rear end?
Just the dog getting out of the car makes a creaking noise.
Here is my dog 'mid haircut'![attachment=16077]

Should have . . . and I did for a day.
So I think the best idea would be to swap the axle off the trailer for the one on my car.

Well that worked!
I've taken the axle off my 306 trailer and stuck it on the car. Handles like a dream now. No creaking or weaving about. The trailer will have a creaking axle tomorrow.
