Newb from Gloucester

Hi all,

My name is Nick and ive just bought a red 306hdi estate. I pick it up on Saturday, here she is in all her glory



Shes done 120k but runs sweet and has had recent cambelt, rear discs pads and calipers, plus a good history. Got her for 1100 which I thought was good considering it is a meridian and has 6 months tax, a years test and only 1 owner from new!

A little about me, im 31, married with 2 kids and am a production engineer. My interests are mainly tinkering with my cars and motor sport.

Ive bought the car to replace my trusty 1.1 106 that I have been using to bash to work and back for the last 2 years while I work on my toy.

Im thinking a good service is in order before i get to know the car.
Then maybe a decat and mid pipe rear box conversion and some 16" 307 alloys, presumably these bolt straight up?

Later down the line I was thinking intercooler and a remap.

Is it worthwhile blanking the egr and are there any other quick/cheap mods I can do?

Any advice will be well received

I think the 307 will be a straight bolt on but may need spacers but it depends which wheel.

You can do a stage 1 remap without the need for an intercooler. Think that puts them up to about 120 bhp

i think getting some challenger rims on there will be a good start, will need spacers as with most wheel swaps, but no worry, easy to get hold of as im sure you know.

Yes mate, well, kind of, the turbos are not twin turbos they are just twin entry singke turbos.

Its been off the road 2 years, has done 80k, is grot free and runs about 260hp. Ive been sorting rhe suspension, cambelt, engine detailing, general service and a supra brake conversion

I need it back immediately!

I think one of the most terryfying cars Ive ever driven was a jap spec mr2 turbo. Incredible lift of oversteer then more oversteer when you booted it haha.
Still though, looking good, don't often see nice mr2s around anymore, British weather hasnt been kind to them lol

Well I picked up the car yesterday, very impressed with it so far.

Today i have cleaned it inside and out, checked tyre pressures, fitted my blue tooth stereo, changed the air filter, greased all the door hinges and catches, unblocked the rear washer and fitted the drivers door card properly.

Tomorrow I will be changing the oil and filter.

Remap is almost a must IMO!
You'll see 120-130bhp and many have actually reported better fuel economy too

Welcome along, looks like you got a good tidy example there. And a stage 1 remap is IMO a no brainer. It just makes everything better with no downsides.

I have owned same car as you for six years. Perhaps you would be interested to know of faults i have replaced so far. Drivers front spring, rear caliper, new a/c rad,window regulator,c/locking motor,heater hose from thermostat to fuel filter, thats about all i can remember, except for usual service items. Mine has done 140thous mls,runs smoothly and just as quick when it had 78thou on it when bought. Lets hope none of theese faults appear on yours.

Cheers for the insight johdi, very useful to know.

The car has had recent rear calipers, so at least I can hopefully discount tgat one.

I can do most repairs myself, and nothing on that list scares me but at least I know what to keep an eye on now.

Gave the estate its first long distance test over the weekend, well happy.

Drove a 585mile round trip from Gloucester to Northumberland and the fuel lights not even on yet

That's loaded up with a full boot, wife and 2 kids!

I didn't hang around either so I'm pleased as hell with what looks like around 50 mpg at a guess.

In other news, I got the mr2 back on the road, aand the headgasket went in under 400miles

Its had a full top end rebuild with top to bottom gaskets, rebuilt oil pump, new water pump, cambelt and clutch.

It's even quicker now, and scares the shit out of me
