Can anyone tell me the best way to remove the bottom rad pipe which goes round the back of engine to the thermostat as the metal section has a hole in it ? thanks ☺

Do you mean the bottom rad hose or the coolant pipe on the back of the block? I'm guessing the latter since that's the one that goes to the stat..?
If so, it's a bit of a pig tbh, you'll need to remove the stat housing from the side of the block. Pulling the driveshaft and removing the lower engine mount helps with access iirc, depends how involved you want to get and if you don't mind replacing the gearbox oil as well.

Do you have to take the gear box out ??

No no, just the driveshaft.
Bear in mind you will need 2 litres of fresh oil (75w80) as pulling the shaft will drain the oil, so drain it first!
Given the choice between Niall and the sheep. I would choose the sheep!
