So after xmas I'll be looking at getting some extra kit for the shed, so figured I'd find out what you guys use and what you rate...
Bear in mind this will only really get use at weekends but I'd like it to be reasonable quality still.
Trolley jack needs to be low profile as I'm bored of messing around just to get the car in the air, I've been debating between

Been looking at engine cranes too but is there any point getting a 2 ton instead of a 1 ton apart from the obvious extra lifting capability?

i think ive got the sgs stuff. 4 stands and a low entry jack was 100 quid or so i think.

what did you think of my crane you loaned from me?
that was about £150 from ebay they are around £130 now
also remember the 1 ton ratting is at its shortest mast length it is easyer to use these with extended masts so you will need the larger 2 ton lift

Seconded.
Although I went for the ally low entry jack, bit beefier and nicer to use... But bit more expensive

I have one like this, 3T capacity was a must as i'm regularly jacking up my landrover, also low entry as i'm regularly jacking up my rallyes or megane.

Yours was spot on mate, tbh probably wouldn't have got the engine out if it was on a shorter setting so may just get a 2 ton as its not much more costly

How come you went for the ally over a steel? Obviously be lighter but I was thinking wouldn't the have more flex in them? Wouldn't want to spend that much only for it to twist the chassis of the jack

Mainly for weight but as said i have put 3t on mine numerous times and never had a problem, i think with the grade aluminium used strength isnt an issue.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DONT GET THE ALLY LOW ENTRY JACKS. All of the ones I've used have bent and flexed and generally been pretty scary to use. I just couldn't trust one.
Engine Cranes I have the cheapest 2 tonne off eBay and it's really nice to use, really sturdy and the fact it can lift a tonne at nearly max extension was very useful unloading the cummins. Will also be useful for lifting motorbikes and old shells.

alloy things don't tend to don't flex much at all, they bend and crack.
also there's design limitations which is what designates the tonnage given to them, stay within that and you'll be fine.
one thing I would be careful of is to go for a known brand, so you can still get seals etc when they leak.

Yeah I've lifted some heavy stuff, close to limit I'd say and its been bob on. Its made with like 12mm thick plates.

I've had my ally jack up to it's full rated load and it's solid as a rock.
Custom roll cages/shiny suspension bits/general fabrication work undertaken, PM me.
Top engine mount repair/reinforcement/chocking for cracked chassis and high powered cars, drive in, drive out, 2 hour turnaround.

Oh and after rubbishing those alloy jacks I'd better put in an alternative solution. Sealey 2500LE is what I use, it's solid as a rock, goes really low, I've had mine for years and it just works. Currently under £100 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-Trolley...SwyjBW3xDH
