Rumble!
#1
On the drive from Brum to Cornwall the car developed a rumble from (I think) the rear left. Disappears when turning left, is worse when turning right. The old man thinks it's a wheel bearing, is he right?

If it is, how many monies will parts cost, and how much labour involved?

Check rear mounts but rear beam could be culprit here, some guys speaking from experience might help you out more but def check that out as a first guess.

What was the noise like when turning? Creaky/juddery?

rear wheel bearings, common when the rear hubs are disturbed one reason i remove them with a puller.

Hubs have never been messed with, but this beam was in the shed for a while, and although it says dry maybe that took its toll. Gonna get it checked out at the garage tomorrow.

How painful will the bill be, is it a specialist job?

Does sound like a bearing. Not an expensive job, no more than an hours labour.

£50-£70 rough price for a bearing at the top end I hope!

Good news then. Does it need pressing in, or does it come assembled into the hub? Could an ape like me do it?

if it goes noisy turning right, then its the left bearing that's gone ( noisy as weight shifts onto it). if you have drums then it need pressing out/new one in, my bearing cost £14

He'll have discs as it's a HDi.

You can't really 'move' a bearing from the old beam, they usually fall apart on removal but I've never done a rear disc one admittedly.

They are ok if pulled off with a puller yes they do normally fall apart but goes back together easy enough.
