To be fair, GT22xx isn't exactly on the same lines as TD05/HX35...

Even a GT2559 I would barely call large at 59mm exducer...

A HX35 has a 54/56mm compressor *INDUCER* and about a 76mm exducer - a 2256 has a 39mm inducer and a 56mm* EXDUCER*...

A TD05 16Gbig has a 68mm exducer... You're talking GT3xyy for those sizes... Unless you can get a small enough housing, you're going to have serious problems getting the bastard on boost!

I'm just considering all options, worst case scenario, any turbos purchased can just sit on the parts shelf with my other turbos.

Having talked to you, Mark and Darren about the Saab unit I have it sounds like I'm better off just going bigger to start with, especially as the engines out and I have all the time in the world to get it going. It's not a daily, there isn't a rush to get it going. I have a spare block to mock up / fabricate bits. Chances are I'll chuck the lump in with the TD04 or T2 on and use the spare block to get something monster trial mounted.

I'd love a GT2256V / GT2260V but I'm yet to see one on eBay for under £240. If one pops up cheap, I'll grab it.

However, I'm also thinking it would be quite fun to have a turbo that doesn't spool until 4K. Not for long term use, but for a giggle.

As far as I understand no ones ran a TD05 independently, or did Dave for a while, I can't remember..

Theres about 30 different sizes of HX35 from not alot bigger than a T2 to f*cking HUGE. The HX35 is just a frame size like GT22.

my old gen 1 gt2260v was an absolute hoot, shame they're still fairly expensive.

gt2256v should be available for under £200

can't see the point in going for a big old tech late spooler, it'll kick in just as everything else on the engine is starting to loose power - unless you compound the bastard, in which case you will have all of the win.

some of the smaller hotsided TD04 are worth a shout, I had one off an iveco diesel (I think?) that looked like it'd be a good spooler, but never ran it.

I missed out on a 2256 for £62 posted, pretty gutted to say the least!

Can't see a compound being on the cards to be honest, not unless someone wanted to sell me a welder up to the job and give me a days crash course on welding! Blush

I'll just keep my eyes peeled.

The TD04L is basically the modern T2 in my eyes, common, cheap, everyone has one. I want something naughtier and the saab unit isn't "ideal" for fitment.

gt2052v is relatively cheap and common atm, and will absolutely fly, different drive than a bigger turbo, but keeps the power exactly where the engine / pump was designed for.

What about a gen 1 GT2359V? £135..

Also found a GT2256V for £190.. I'll keep looking!

Also found a GT2052S for £110.

Can anyone explain how to look up turbo maps myself so I don't have to guess/ask?

I believe mine is only a 13g, so nothing like a SAAB TD04HL15T or 16T.

I noticed a V70R has an 18T, some even a 19T.

the 25TD's run an 11g.

Only way to run those would be hybrid... The turbine and housing on them is just massive, end up with a 3k+ boost threshold... I mean they didn't spool on a 2.5l 20v until like 3.2ish anyway, wait until you put it on a 1.9 8v diesel!!! The standard 'L' turbine and housing is even too big tbf...

Tbf a 2052v is such an upgrade, provides near instant spool, very good power, it's just that people get blinded by bigger and bigger units... Unless you're spending mental money on a gtb2260 or pick up a gtb2056 up cheap, there's not much else I'd go for... Remember mine made 175hp at 21psi boost... Not to mention they're cheap, plentiful, small ish...
