Correct me if I'm being stupid but isn't that how an immobiliser is supposed to work?

What do mean resetting it? Is it standard or aftermarket?

Take the steering wheel shroud off and make sure the pick up ring is seated where it should be. If its only just in range of the chip and sometimes it doesn't pick it up, it will refuse to start until the BSI has gone to sleep (car locked for a while) and woken up (ignition switched on) regardless of if the chip in the key is now in range.
