Does your car have a sunroof? if so water may have leaked through and rusted the component in the ceiling.
Aside from that tell us more about the following:
What phase is it?
When did it last work?

The seal can go in the sunroof grant, leaking water through and rusting the component (where the receiver sits). Had it happen to mates car and also my old ZX which is very similar design as you know.
I'm assuming this is RF key fob? Not an infrared

I've heard of plenty of leaking sunroofs. But there is a drainage channel all around the sunroof. It is the take off points where the run off hoses go to the bottom of the chassis, where the sunroof normally leaks from.
New one on me.

Alright guys, tryed reconnecting it to the car but hasn't worked, not sure if I've done it correct but copied the manual instructions,
Anyone have any other ideas? It's so annoying using the key, aha
