I know this is a hot topic...and one for which I am usually hot for saying a big no no...chavvy look, blinds everyone, fails MOT etc...
BUT
I have acquired a set of ph1 gti/s16 twin optic headlights....
whats everyones thoughts on fitting HIDs just to the main beam??
this wouldnt blind people in normal driving with dips...wouldnt look chavvy and I dont believe mains get beam tested...so if fitted stealthy they wont even be noticed by the old local mot'er...
thoughts?

Don't they need to warm up to work efficiently/well, when do you ever drive with your main beam on for a long period of time?

Personaly i don't see the issue if there in the mains as your not blinding anyone, I've got a set in my fogs as i use them with main beam
If MOT is that much of an issue just unplug the ballast and stick a standard bulb in there?

Yeah they need to warm up so you'd flick onto main beam and have no light for 10seconds whilst they warm up. Not a safe idea in my mind aha
Doesnt even own a 306.

if you had hid mains behind frosted phase 1 lenses wouldn't the beam be awful?, like no distance

HID's dont take well to being constantly switched on or off as well so if you flash people to let them go or if your going down a country road and turning them on or off as people come towards you, they will soon die. Ive always said in our headlights, good quality bulbs are the way forwards.

fair enough, thanks for all the input...
as said though, dipped would stay on when main beam put on so you wouldnt be plunged into darkness.
I am getting a front bumper with fogs which I intend to switch to spots/driving lights....
so will stick with what I love...Osram Nightbreakers+
thanks

Try Phillips blue visions. Much brighter than the night breakers and have a 12 month warranty and they are a nice colour. More white than yellow!

i had hids on my main beam for about 9months and were great. Ideal for those dark country roads/quiet motorways at night... Flashing people out of junctions and stuff, just used to wave/switch on my dipped or f*ck um!

careful. Thats a perfect way to melt some wiring unless you have upgraded it!
