No, not in a 306 anyway lol.
1.9 or 2.0 Diesel in a T plate 306.......... There is a 1.4 petrol though.

If he says its a "1.4" then would it not just be the 1.4 petrol?

Tbh, Im wondering if the OP is looking at a 106, and confusing it with a 306 as he says he knows nothing about them.....but I'm not sure Pug were still using the 1.4NAD in 106s by T plate anyway.

Are you sure its a 306 then? If so, its definitely not a 1.4 Diesel.

There's a 1.8, 1.9 and 2.0 Diesel in a 306...
1.8 DW8 NA
1.9 XUD9A NA
1.9 XUD9TE Turbo
2.0 DW10 HDi
That's it.
If it's a 1.4 Diesel, it could be a 206....

Well there you go then. If you looking for econemy you could still see 45-55mpg out of it with a steady foot. And 35mpg still with an extreamly heavy foot

My phase 1, M reg diesel 106 was a 1.5 (soon to be rocking an XUD9 though). The 1.5 was basically the 1.6 petrol block with very thick liners in it. The crank shaft is also the same as the gti iirc. All I know is that they rev like hell for a diesel and are pretty much bombproof. I even know of a guy who has turbo'd his 1.5 with no internal changes. It's currently running ~8 or 9 psi and would take more, except for the fact that it already rapes the clutch on low boost in anything other than 1st or second. The 1.4's diesels were total shit.

They're cast block with integral liners, so no liners as such, but yeah.
