What was done in the major service? Has the head been off at all? Is it leaking coolant?

Check to see if the coolant is pressurising and rad hoses getting hard.

and any cold patches on the rad when the engine is up to temp, or is the matrix blocked so no cooling air passes thru it, does the fan cut in a high temp?? to bring high temp down??

be prepared to drive the car if the high temp fan does not cut in so as to cool down the engine else it will overheat and boil, real problem then!!!

any mayo in the engine oil and loss of coolant, how as inside rocker cover when it was removed recently??

does the exhaust make a "fizzz" sound when engine revved, suggesting a blocked exhaust ( and poorish performance ) ?

does the heater work and push out hot air??

How did you bleed it? The coolant system on these can be a right twat to get all the air out of. 2 litre plastic bottle with the bottom chopped off to raise to the coolant level and push the air out works for me. Check your rad cap is OK and on properly too.....had that one during an MOT once.

If it's had a new thermostat and was ok before that, I'd suggest the system has an airlock somewhere.... Alan's advice is good.
