Saab 93 1.9tdi...random blue smoke
#1
So...
Saab 9-3 1.9tid estate. Done 115k miles.

Friends car. Drives mint. Did service on it today...clean bill of health other than rear wiper.
(side point...what the hell did they think putting the oil filter there!?)

But it will quite randomly blue smoke.

Seems to do it when...
Once warm.
After driving/cruising at 50/60mph, come to slow zone...IE 30mph or junction.

Begins to light blue smoke from exhaust.

Doesnt do it every time...

And only tried it once but seems to not do it again if you stop, turn on/off, go again.

Saab forums seem to point to egr or dpf.

Ideally I wana get them mapped out and blank/remove for him anyway.

So:

1) thoughts on the smoke?

2) Best mapper for this purpose?

Must add, it has supposedly been mapped before and has stickers on back/engine from the company.

Cheers ears

No help I know, but a friend had a saab with the same issues.

blue is oil so probably turbo seals or stem seals.

maybe breather issues also.

which engine is it? there are a few.
need a part number? http://public.servicebox.peugeot.com/ and http://service.citroen.com/ will sort you out.

The zx19....
I dont believe it to be seals...its perfect when cold, can sit idling for half an hour without a puff of smoke....and when giving big guns is clean on boost

That sounds like a Citroen, sure it's not a Z19DTH?

I have seen blueish smoke from regens, think it's probably more a shade of grey than 'oil blue' tbf though. Shame he's got an estate, the hatches didn't need a DPF, or at least the Vectra's didn't!

So this happens consistently after 2 or 3miles of driving...

If you stop, switch off/on, it goes away until 2-3miles again...

I'm thinking dpf/custom map issue.

Any suggestions on good mappers for these...I'm guna gut the dpf and blank egr and want a known good replacement map

So....
ECU went off to JP/dervtech.
Meanwhile found DPF to be half gutted.
So gutted that fully. Blanked egr.
JP found post injection to not have been removed...so now ecu is fully dpf/egr deleted.
Put ecu back in this afternoon...

Still same symptoms.

Drove a LOT to try and see how they develop/repeat.

It is very consistent.

Drive 1.5-2.5 miles...starts to blue smoke, puffy/hazy.

If you stop the car, will do it at idle with a slightly rough idle.
If you turn engine off (either while moving or after stopping the car) and turn it back on...smoking stops...

1.5-2.5mile later...smoke again.

Also has
"limited performance" come up on dash.

(but its not in limp mode, drives WELL!)

Any ideas?????

No turbo issues?

No noises, no power loss, no real oil in boost pipes...

And I can't see how switching off/on would stop a turbo spitting smoke

I take it you have been on the Saab forums?
As i say, a mate had one that did it now and again, mainly sitting in traffic, his may have been a DPF re-gen though. I don't know much about Saabs TBH so I'm not really much use to you.

Might seem like a weird one but is the PCV or crank case breather Non return valve/pipes screwed?> it will start to drink oil if the crank case becomes pressurised and a mate of mine had an issue similar to this, it would get warm, 5 miles for the pressure to build in the crank case and sump and it would start to smoke bluie/grey smoke..

turns out the PCV and non return valves were both shot (in fact his NRV was fitted the wrong way round) and the pressure would build to push oil past the rings and voila, smoke!

should note that it wasnt using a huge amount of oil, would drop about 1/4 of a litre over 500-1000 miles...
Given the choice between Niall and the sheep. I would choose the sheep!

Tried all Saab forums... No reply to my thread.

But its fixed. Got a delphi150 on it.

DPF was trying to regen still. Did a reset on it...

Seems fine now.

how was it trying to do a regen if it was all mapped out correctly or is there something other than the engine ecu that tells it to do it at least you got to the bottom of it.

Good question tbh...

Fault code has come back so need to read ecu again...although no occasions of smoke
