Ok so we changed my cambelt today.
We made sure all 3 pulleys was timed up and bolts in holes.
Then after changing belt we took them out turned engine over and checked again they was timed, which they was.
Everything is tensioned up correct, but after starting for first time it ran with a very loud knocking noise. This noise was not there before we started the cam belt.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Please help
Thanks in advance.

Metal knocking or preignition knocking?
Did you loosen off the cam pulleys?

Does it knock it time with revs? Or is it random?

I haven't revved if Matt it knocked so I turned it off. This knocking wasn't there before.

Is the knocking rhymical and vary with engine revs, or is it random and intermittent?
Did the timing holes line up both before and after doing the belt?
The standard lower pulleys have a tendancy to slip on XU 16v's so the timing hole doesn't line up any more when the engine is correctly aligned. Many people have made that mistake, turning the engine with the belt off so the holes line up, and on a GTi-6, you'll normally end up bending valves. That usually results more in a tap than a knock mind you.
If it was all aligned before and after and thus you're confident the cam timing is correct, are you sure you've tensioned the belt sufficiently so it's not slapping?
Try taking the aux belt off to rule out anything related to that.

Everything was aligned before and after mate, I didn't want tl rev it as I didn't want to damage anything. After the knocking I checked the timing again and it still fine.
The aux belt wasn't on at the time so couldn't be that. The cambelt is tensioned correctly.

Using my solid pulley too right? So should have no issue with the timing as that's spot in everytime
Belt on correctly? Routing etc? Is the cambelt cover off? Turn the engine over by hand and see if anything fouls or if the belt moves

Yeah using your pulley Matt, nothing moves or fouls on the belt weve checked that.
So we've tried revving it and it's there and gets louder so valves are hitting and they're f*cked!!!!!!
f*cking hates cars! I give up!!!!

I had the exact same thing about a week ago. Changed the belt and it was knocking and tapping like hell. Let it idle for 10 15 mins and it went quieter and stopped. Let the oil get warm and circulate and see what happens
However, check the tensioner is still tight etc

I don't see how it would have trouble circulating, cars been sat for about 7 years. Without this problem, but I have f*ck all else to loose now! So why not give it a try.

I think it's because from turning the engine over and over again it's starts to get a little dry. But just double check the timing and the tensioner etc before you start it again

Lol saw this after i commented on FB. Knew it would be that. Mine did exactly the same after i did the belt. Had is jacked up on one side for ages so can only imagine air got into the lifters. Started it and it sounded like a tractor but after a drive to get the oil to temp, its disappeared.

Yeah it was that mate, its all sorted now.
Took it to a different mot place and he was being a little picky, he recommended I cancel the test and take it to other place, I dont think he wanted to do it because it was his very last one. He wanted to go home.

Im glad its not just me! :-( but at least I know now. Cant wait for it to be on road now. I doubt it will be pristine ready for french car show, cos I wanna iron out any creases. But as long as I sort out a bumper and get it clean it should be good.
