Bmx bike building

Right as my car is going off road again for abit
I'm going to have to bike it, I can borrow one for now, but going to rebuild my bmx as it's f*cked lol

So bike people, what do I need?

I have a full bike, two bent wheels, rusty bars, f*cked brakes and the chain/bearings are f*cked I think

Can any bike people right a full list of all parts to build a bike, kinda like a check list, so when I take mine to bits I can see what's usable and what's not.
Plus I have no idea what I'm doing, anyone wanna right up how to take apart the crank (I think it's a crank, and would I benefit from a different one? No idea what's on there now, what's best)
Plus any other upgrades

Sounds like it be cheaper to buy a new one!!!

If you mean the bit that runs between the pedals its called a bottom bracket...for some bizzarre reason.

^^ The pedals are connected to cranks, which have an axle that runs through the bottom bracket which is a housing for bearings

Matt, what bike is it to start off with? Is it a pre-built (e.g. a Mongoose, GT, etc.) or something that you built up previously? If it's the former, you may well be better off just buying a new one as new bikes are relatively (relative to the cost of the sum of the parts separately) cheap these days, and you can get a lot for your money.

If it's an older pre-built bike, then you most likely have a "1-piece crank" where one of the cranks has the axle as part of it, and the other crank bolts on to the other end once it's in the bottom bracket. This is most likely what you have since a 3-piece crank is quite obvious on how to take it apart.

3 piece - notice the shape is different, and the bolts on the front are on either side which thread into the axle:

Actually where are you living at the moment, I could probably come and do it for you Sunday morning pre going to sam/jonnys

Essentially you want a new chain, brake cables (if its got a gyro f*ck that off), inner tubes, maybe tyre and a whole lot of greasing up components, maybe a freewheel.

Actually depending on what cranks you have and what you want I think I have a set of profile racing 180mm cranks and both euro and american BB (both sealed bearing) that i'd sell you or swap for parts

It's a diamondback pos. lol I haven't riden it in years! It works but the chain/crank sounds f*cked iirc

By the looks of things it's a 1 piece crank then!

Dum I would live for you too come take a look but unfortunatly it's in Wimborne atm and I have no way of getting there too collect it. So was going to order some parts and hope for the best for when I can pick it up haha.

I'm looking at wheels now, brakes with be removed and sorted, I know the fronts f*cked so I'll sack that off. Rears need replacing.

I know for fact I need a new chain.

It will probably be cheaper to sort the bearings/chain than buy a new bike. On a very tight budget until I'm paid so need it sorted ASAP.

My list so far is

Rear brakes
Brake cable (if I can't use the old one)
New wheels (if funds allow)
New tires (as above)
New inner tubes
New chain
New 1 peice crank and bearings

Matt how far are you from the bike, I'm sure we can do something about fuel money to go and get her in the estate while I'm down anyway.

Just replace the brake cable, its about £1.50 from Wilko (who also happen to do brake pads, tyres and tubes cheap) Crank bearings will be loose or caged if its a 1 piece so probably just need re greasing rather than replacing. Tesco also sell parts and do a chain but I'm not sure it would be wide enough, looked like a MTB one.

How bent are the wheels and are the spokes rusty as if they aint that bent and the spoke nipples are good I can true them.


My worry is that it's the freewheel thats crappy (the toothed bit on the back wheel that the chain goes round) as they rent particularly cheap and are an utter PITA to get off an old bike as it'll be seized on.



Get me some pics dude as I have both a brand new shimano V brake and a tektro U brake in the garage although you might have to re use a brake lever. Actually I have a pair of pedals (or 2) that you can have






Also price up what your doing before you start, halfrauds sell a brand new BMX sub £70 and a brand new mountain bike sub £80 or even sub £100 for one with suspension

It's Wimborne. I'm in Chichester. It's about 60 miles :/ tbh, I'll look online tonight at bmxs etc and see if I can find one cheap.

The wheels aren't that bent, just notice the slight wobble while riding, doesn't effect it much just annoying if anything lol

Tbh I'd probably replace the back wheel, iirc the back wheel is a real cheap one and the freewheel is probably f*cked lol
