It's about the same on fuel as a GTi, give or take 25-30 mpg'ish average.. but has like 40hp less.
They go about as well as a stage 1 DT/HDi

Not that great then better off going for a gti6 if i went down the petrol route, or keep looking for a decent diesel for sale

Exactly, everything is pretty similar just a bit worse than a '6.. and GTi's aren't exactly expensive nowadays so it would make sense to get a GTi first.

Get a gti6, or go for a 1.8 with gti6 manifold on that's better than a xsi.

There are loads for sale for next to nothing for a reason I'd imagine.

Owned a xsi not very quick considering to amount of petrol it used.would rather have a hdi as cheaper running cost and insurance and more available mods

Yes get a gti6 or a 1.8. I have been running the gti6 inlet manifold on the 1.8 for almost 3 years now and its been no problem at all. It makes 125hp and does about 390 miles on a tank.
On a diesel though you can make 125hp easily with a stage 1 dturbo or hdi and youll get around 500 miles on a tank. It wont have the bwarp though but itll be a lot cheaper.
