I had a genuine pug sport alloy one in my 1.8 which wasn't too different from that, it was either cold as fook during the winter or hotter than the surface of the sun the rest of the time!
Leather ones are better IMO. Either that or one of those pool ball ones from eBay haha

This. Them metal ones are horrible although if your adamant, I'd take some 2000 grit paper over it then polish it up.

I did a similar thing to one for my other car, i got a scratched focus rs one, ( as a new one was well over a 100 quid )
only thing is from the factory it has a kind of brushed finish not polished. I used various grades of wet and dry and then autosol or similar and it looked great when finished, it took a little while to do but worth the effort.
It depends how deep the scratches are on the one you get but i started with 800 grit wet and dry and worked my way down to 2000 before using the autosol, as i started with 1500 and that wouldn't touch some of the deeper scratches in mine.

I looked closely at my sisters car (206CC) with the same aluminium style as I'd like, and it;s that same brushed+lacquer style as you describe, so not easy to refurb to OEM, but perhaps better just to go all out and polish it!
I bought one from eBay today, so will take some before and after pictures later.

Yeah there was no way of getting it looking oem, so i just polished it and it came out really nice.
