Clonk from front end
#1
Hi
Anyone had these symptoms on the front end of their cars.
At very low speeds and when turning from lock to lock, almost at point the wheels are straight, I get a loud clonk from the n/s. Sounds like something is under tension and letting go.

Cheers

Could be a number of things.
Check your front springs, as i had something very similar when one had snapped, it was just the top coil that had snapped off.

Were the top mount bearings changed with the spring?

As above - were the top mount bearings changed? When I did mine, the top mounts were supplied with the bearing having been fited upside down, and had exactly the same symptoms.

By the way, they were genuine Peugeot ones as well that had the bearing incorrectly fitted.

That's how they usually come to save space and packaging....you're supposed to turn them over before fitting though. Bit late now I know haha!

So the drivers side spring has turned out to be cracked. I would had it done the same time as the other one. However this one replaced 4 years ago ( n/s is 14 years old), so thought it was ok. Turns out it was not. When told to replace in pairs, do it. That has cured the other symptom that appeared. Namely the car made a loud bang on Saturday and the car pulled to the right. Had a fight fight on way to work yesterday morning. Joy of having a garage next to work. Ring garage and get car fixed when you get back from a days driving.
So back to original problem. The car does need it's tie rods done on the rack, but tyre wear is even and the amount of play is mot advisory. Mind you if 3 mm of play is acceptable, hate to see what it would need to be to fail? Hanging off! The car does not have a strut brace fitted. The top mount bearing theory does sound right, as the noise appear about 1 1/2 week after the spring was replaced.
So of I go to sort this out.

Cheers guys.
