completely normal for a Bosch pump you should just about be able to turn it by hand if you really put for back into it! will turn easily for a some of the rotation then get tight as the rollers start...

in the uk there were automatic gearboxes available for the Xud11 found in citroen XM, peugeot 605 this would be a direct bolt on fit for the xud9 as they share the bolt pattern for the fly wheel/ flex...
