right I found it, its the brown sensor on the top of the thermostat housing, Now when I disconnect the plug from the sensor the fan comes on; is this correct?

C2K, Spot on mate!! found 2 broken wires in the rubber gaiter. Solenoid now works, and heated rear screen works as well.
