Turbo inlet and piping re-route questions (Pics and new Q's) - ginge191 - 16-01-2012

Looking to re pipe my turbo inlet, to remove the restrictive 0 shape piping behind the inlet fannymold....

few questions...

1 - what size is the KKK K14 (iirc) inlet size, so i know what size silicone and piping to buy.
2 - is it easiest to just get a U bend then route back to stock area
3 - if i bought this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JJC-Aluminium-Intercooler-Air-Filter-Pipe-51mm-90-Deg-/270823430840?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3f0e559ab8 would i be able to find a silicone pipe adapter if the size was different to acount for the size differences - its 2", believe thats correct?
4 - as for a filter, would it be advisable to use the standard air box or a cone filter of some type?

My aim is to create as little restriction as possible to create the quickest spool time possible.

Any other input would be muchly appreciated...

ps. - if anyone has any spare piping they want to sell, let me know.

Also found a standard U bend http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180-Degree-Al ... 641ff59dc2

if your really that worried about spool times ,just run a fine mesh over the inlet side, or eve nnothing at all.
quite a lot of people do it

hm id rather not Sad
having a naked turbo scares me... dont want to flunk it up, plus, i enjoy going through puddles too much..

Re: Turbo size and piping re-route questions - 4WayDiablo - 16-01-2012

i think the best one i ve seen that cant be that restrictive came straight up from inlet side then out by the brake master cylinder and to the front that way

yeh i was looking there, i suppose i could mesh over the end of some piping and have it acting as a snorkel, if you know what i mean?

Could prevent it sucking up water and also allow the filter to be removed, as i dont think it fits that side at all...

Re: Turbo size and piping re-route questions - 4WayDiablo - 16-01-2012

its best to have it pointing down, things dont fall in and things that try to be sucked up have gravity to deal with! Big Grin

Re: Turbo size and piping re-route questions - ginge191 - 16-01-2012

hmm ok... perhaps it could go as high as the intercooler, then back down towards the back of the grill?

Re: Turbo size and piping re-route questions - silverzx - 16-01-2012

Got the same problem as you atm mate. I can hear it starving of air up the top end of the rev's (3.5k'ish+).

Re: Turbo size and piping re-route questions - ash23 - 16-01-2012

OK so.........

1. IIRC it was 50mm (i measured one for somebody on .net once but can't remember) but will check tonight.

2. Yes

3. this --> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Silicone-Hose-Elbow-180-Degree-51mm-/130533881499?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Car_Care_Cleaning&hash=item1e646cf69b#ht_1750wt_854 would be better as you will end up having less joins and its cheaper Wink
but yeah 51mm internal for silicone will fit 51mm external metal stuff!

4. I would go for a cone or a performance filter in the standard box, I feel that a cone/induction kit jobbie would flow better though providing its big enough Smile

**All IMO which is subject to change at any time**

Re: Turbo size and piping re-route questions - ginge191 - 17-01-2012

Cheers padge - looks good u but looks very tight... what have you got from the turbo? what kind of piping is that, looks flexible!?

And mark, that U bend looks perfect, cheers - and yeh, a measurement would be excellent. i would probably remove the standard airbox i think and route it behind the grill..

im guessing these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/48mm-51mm-SILICONE-HOSE-ACE-T-BOLT-CLIPS-QTY-10-/140351306336?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20ad96fa60 work best?

As I say, I'm pretty sure that its 50mm but will check later and yeah those clips would be fine but since its the intake side and will have no pressure in you could get away with something cheaper like jubilee clip style ones Smile

ah ok! ofcourse, lack of pressure, no need for the high quality clips!
oh and mark, i keep wanting to post "Thanks mr 'hairy' from flynn the other day! lol what a douchebag!

Re: Turbo size and piping re-route questions - ginge191 - 17-01-2012

awesome - cheers for the help mate - i'll get measuring, see what kind of sizes im going to need to route behind the inlet, hmm may be a tight fit! i'll have a look and sort something out soon Smile

no doubt i'll have some more questions on routing this soon.....

Re: Turbo size and piping re-route questions - Poodle - 17-01-2012

If you're going to go for a cone filter get a good one, the standard airbox flows surprisingly well.

such as a K&N? to be honest, im tempted to strap some mesh over the end and be done without a filter you know...

there is more room than you think! you can get your arm to the turbo along there so it'll be fine.

As for filters, just fit something massive with a huge surface area, the larger the surface are the less restrictive it will be as more air can get through Smile

mesh over the end of the pipe will be quite restrictive, you have to remember that by doing that you are covering a good % of the opening with the wire that makes the mesh..............think about it!

And like me you will slowly be filling your block up with little bits of shite that will get stuck behind the piston rings and score the crap out of the block Tongue

it is not the best option and he has already said that he would rather not run open filter Smile

Re: Turbo size and piping re-route questions - studturbo - 17-01-2012

i can help it with mine as i cant get a filter onit not enuff room and not got any pipe work too run to put filter on Sad

Lies, I have the same turbo so I know there is room! Tongue

Same as ginge is doing, 180* bend and some bits of silicone & alloy to get to where you want it Wink

I have a massive case of CBA and have had since it was fitted lol plus I have 2 spare engines in my garage so its not the end of the world...........

Re: Turbo size and piping re-route questions - studturbo - 17-01-2012
