In morning when I first start my car it's really smokey out the back when idling. Engine also sounds like a full on shitbag. Then after a few minutes when it's warm it's absolutely fine.
I was warned about this when I bought the car. Just thought a service would sort it so I've serviced it and its still the same.
Any ideas?

Have the glow plugs been changed recently? If one is defective it can cause the car to sound like it's not firing on all pots and therefore you'll get some unburnt fuel coming out the tail.
I had a similar problem a few years ago, changed all the plugs and hey presto, she started on the twist of my key first time and minimal smoke.

Definitely sounds like plugs. Get some Bosch Duraterms. Cost a few quid more but last much longer and are more reliable.

Mines the same, must get round to doing the plugs some time soon, but until then I'll carry on the way I am. Warm the plugs 2 or 3 times before actually firing the engine, and it starts no problem, no smoke, and nice and smooth.

I used to get it, in the mornings it would puff loads of smoke and sort of 'hunt' changed the heater plugs and it was gone.

Yeah it's first up straight away when I give the plugs chance to warm up. But it's just very smokey and chuggy. Listened to it this morning and does down like its missing.
I suppose it could be plugs as its fine later on in the day. A little chuggy till its driven then normal.

everyone is right in saying glowplugs, mine did the same until I changed them, ran really lumpy on 3 cylinders until the 4th warmed up.

The 4th one to warm up will be the one behind the fuel Pp, or is it behind the fuel filter???
As this one isn't changed by some owners cos it's a little trickier to get to!!

Another question.
My heaters work... But my engine only sits under 70c. So my heaters are not very warm.
If I leave the car running so it warms up to 76-80c the heaters work brilliant.
Was just think if you guys would agree this would be due to a bypassed thermostat?
Or do you know of anything else?

Start it up when cold and feel the top hose give it some revs the thermostat should open at 83 ish as said above but if the top pipe gets really warm really quick then the thermostat could either be missing or stuck open

Not bothered trying yet mate. I have a leaky rad I need to sort first. Oh I also have Christmas shopping I need to sort too :p so the glowies are last on the list. They start the car that's all I'm fussed :p

this ^^^^^^^^^ the previous owner of my car cross threaded the glowie behind the pump and i can't remove it now, therefore i only replaced the other 3 glowplugs so mine misses and smokes on startup now . . .just have to live with it . .

Glow plugs on the xud 306 are fiddly but not impossible to change, I changed some on a mates( first time ever working on a derv ) took about 30 minutes to do.
If I can do it anyone and there nan could do it.
In short change the plugs you lazy
