Beam change troubles - rocker8742 - 17-11-2012

Beam swap went reasonably well today up until we snapped off the bleed nipple on the brake so going to get the garage to sort the caliper out on Monday as i still have some brakes byte they're a bit light

Problem is when driving im getting a horrible noise coming from the rear wheels which is worse when going over bumps, also the car seems to be incredibly bouncy at the rear

Iv had a quick look and it seems both rear wheels are rubbing against the inner arches but I've never had the problem on the last 3 306s they've been on

Any ideas why changing the beam would cause this much difference?

beam sounds f*cked mate. dampers deffo gone, hence the bounce. any camber? thatd explain the scrubbing

bad times bro Sad

Look from the rear for excessive camber, sounds like the beam you've put on is less than healthy. Mine scrubbed the wheel arch liners as the camber got worse - i changed it shortly after.

scrubbing inside or out? deffo a gti beam i.e gti TB's and ARB?

What sort of gap have you got between the tyre and the inner arch liner on both sides?
Make sure there is virtually no movement in the liner when checking this - if there is your arch liner is probably loose like mine ha ha

Had same issue with mine when replaced it

Re: Beam change troubles - rocker8742 - 18-11-2012

Doesn't look like there's any camber tbh

RE: Beam change troubles - spike2002 - 18-11-2012

You have a pm mate.

Re: Beam change troubles - rocker8742 - 18-11-2012

Afaik its a gti beam and there's virtually no gap to the inside of the arch maybe a couple mm max

RE: Beam change troubles - puglove - 18-11-2012

no gap against the inner plastic arch at the back?. if so it maybe the plastic arch linner in out of place. failing that 2x 5mm spacers lmao

Re: Beam change troubles - rocker8742 - 18-11-2012

Got a couple of bodged spacers at about 4mm which seems to have solved the issue for now but don't see why there would be the difference

RE: Beam change troubles - cully - 18-11-2012

205 or 206 gti beam?

RE: Beam change troubles - puglove - 18-11-2012

not a posibility cully different mounts

Re: Beam change troubles - rocker8742 - 18-11-2012

Arch liners seem like they're where they should be

When i said bouncy i meant its incredibly stiff until you put alot of force onto it then it bounces back very quickly, c ould this be the shocks?

Beam change troubles - ash240970 - 18-11-2012

What wheels and tyres have you got on it?

Re: Beam change troubles - rocker8742 - 18-11-2012

Tyres are 195 55 15 wheels arentt standard pug ones and tbh don't know what et they are but I've never had a problem in the past

Beam change troubles - ash240970 - 18-11-2012

Hmm the wheels could be part of the problem then seeing as you have sorted it with spacers but I'd change the beam mounts and shocks ASAP for peace of mind as soon as you can afford it.

RE: Beam change troubles - rocker8742 - 18-11-2012

I can swap the shocks over from the old beam as afaik there alright

RE: Beam change troubles - Oil-burner - 18-11-2012

If you swap the beam mounts or have a spare set with the new beam give me a shout!

Beam change troubles - ash240970 - 18-11-2012

I'd swap them for known good ones then bud - at least that will give you some peace of mind, just the mounts to sort next and proper spacers.

RE: Beam change troubles - rocker8742 - 18-11-2012

Spacers will be ordered on payday

Any idea how difficult it is to swap the shocks over?

RE: Beam change troubles - Oil-burner - 18-11-2012

2 bolts each mate, 10 min job!

RE: Beam change troubles - rocker8742 - 18-11-2012

that easy? dont need to keep em compressed or anything daft?

Also ill let you know about the beam mounts on my old one

RE: Beam change troubles - Oil-burner - 18-11-2012

Yeah mate, it'll make sense when you get them off!

Cheers matey!

RE: Beam change troubles - rocker8742 - 18-11-2012

Daft question but how are the beam mounts actually attatched?

RE: Beam change troubles - Oil-burner - 18-11-2012

Unbolt from boot floor and on beam.
Bit of a pain to get to them in the boot so you'll want an extension or long socket.
Google them and you'll see.
