406 HDI Estate, Couple Questions - bigcheez2k3 - 19-09-2012

Got the chance to have a 406 estate, it's an ex taxi so moon and back mileage but it's £350, 4 new tyres and will have 12 months MOT.

Been offered it by a mate who is the mechanic for a taxi firm, he's serviced it regularly so hoping it'll be ok.

Should be the same engine as the 306 HDI so is there anything I should look out for when I have a look at it?

Anyone got any experience with 406's, what should I look out for on them?

pretty much the same things as the 306. They dont rot much and as your aware, are bullet proof but only with regular servicing.
Electric mirrors pack up easily on them so dont expect them to work and dials can go a bit funny but a new set of dials will sort this

Very strong cars, my dad had one with 330k on it, and it drove pretty well. Steering rack bushes can fail and give you a vibration through the wheel that feels like warped discs, other than that it's usual pug stuff, dodgy electrics and that.

Decided to get it, picking it up tomorrow, pics to follow.

Can't go wrong at that price mate, you could probably sell the FMiC setup for £100 on here...

Also worth noting that it might not be the same engine as the 306 HDi as it could probably be the 110, not the 90.

Checked and it's the 90 so all good there Smile

Excellent, 'cause I think the 110 suffers from DMF/DPF problems.

That's the 136 HDi mate, I'm pretty sure the 110 HDi is just a 90 with a cooler and a different map...

110 and 90 are basically the same as Liam says, no DMF, no DPF....so why the hell didn't they put it in the 306!? Confused

Anyway, expect it to be fairly reliable, but also pretty slow Sam, 90bhp in a car as heavy as the 406 isn't exactly brisk lol!

It's not bad at all really, diesel torque shifts the weight pretty well so even the 90 feels fine to drive, it's not underpowered, although its in no way fast...

I test drove a 406 HDi90 while looking for stop gap, it felt underpowered to me, but I guess it depends what you're comparing it to really! Smile

Compared to my d-turbo it's slow, especially on the motorway although the clutch is a lot lighter, got in the dt to move it when I got home and had trouble pushing the clutch even though I've been doing it for the last 2 years.
