Righto, as some of you may know I recently bought a HDi 90, which already has a Pro-Steve Stage 1 Map on it and a boost gauge fitted.
I get a really loud whooshing sound on boost coming from the turbo area, is this normal or is this a boost leak somewhere? I've never heard it before. Sounds like my car is trying to mimic a Boeing 747 on boost. Funny, but is it supposed to do that?
Also, when on boost the gauge is reading about 15psi. Is that about right or is that low?
Does feel like the engine has a lot of urgency but the speed it gathers seems a bit 'meh' compared with all the bloody noise it's making.

If you can hear the turbo more than you can feel it theres probably a boost leak somewhere......

Hehe, loud wooshing noise, you want to hear mine or Ginge's running with no filter on! it sounds like a jet engine on boost!
if yours has all the intake pipework in place then I would say its a boost leak, 15 PSI is pretty much standard and if it has a map on it should be slightly more than that (like around 17/18 psi) I would be checking all the connections between the turbo and the inlet, it could be the manifold gasket or any of the joins in between

Previous owner attempted to fit an EGR blank but lost it, also fitted a new elbow with take off for boost gauge. Could be in any of these areas I guess?
Anybody local want to have a butchers you're quite welcome haha!

With this EGR blanking thing, do I just need one plate from eBay or two (for each end of the system)?

There are a series of bungs where wires/cables run from the foot-well to the engine bay. Sometimes they can not be fitted right (if someone has done a clutch cable badly say) and it sounds like there is a jet taking off in the footwell

i had the same problem with the bungs not fitted on my last 306 and it was completely standard but still went like a 90 fixed the bungs whooshing gone

Bumping an old thread of mine now.
So fitted a higher quality boost gauge today and it's peaking at 12. 12PSi.
That's low, right? Loud whooshing noise is still there, have had other things I've needed to fix recently so haven't had a chance to look for a leak anywhere.
I know the previous owner replaced the 'elbow' with one for a take-off for the boost gauge, is it possible there is a leak here?
Really need a HDi guru local to Hertfordshire...

Stage1 should be 15-16psi
Try it up hill in 3rd and 4th and see what the peak you can hit is.

about 14psi is standard which is 1 bar
yes the do leak from the manifold elbow normaly visable with black gunk oil staining

Hmm so something is definitely amiss! I'll try under more load tomorrow up a hill, but I couldn't get the b*stard over 12 earlier.
Goes alright mind. Would a boost leak cause lower mpg? Cos mine has tailed-off from 55.6mpg to a lowly 51mpg on the last tank lol

Tbh i think you can safely assume there's a boost leak lol, check around the compressor outlet and the manifold inlet elbow. Get on with it already! :p
Yes, not getting as clean a burn so less efficient.

Only a wisp of black smoke. Drove it this morning, the loud whooshing noise is still there so I suspect there's a leak, but can't look again until the weekend. Oh, and baby's due date is tomorrow!

Dont they all leak around the manifold elbow? There was quite a lot of oil on mine....but doesn't look a big enough leak to cause a noticeable lack of boost? I take it it would need a new gasket but would it make much difference?

Trust me.. that gasket can leak and can cause a BIG leak, keeps leaking on emmas HDi and it's PITA, just need to rip it off and put a new gasket on

That's not the only thing around that area to check, also try checking the EGR (as suggested two months ago :p ).

For some daft reason they don't show the gasket in that diagram.....the part number's 0348 N6. It's shown on the intake manifold diagram instead.
You might as well give the insides of the elbow a good clean and get all the EGR crap out while you're there. Make sure the mating faces of the elbow and inlet manifold are spotless too before you fit the new gasket and bolt it all back up. If you've got a blanking plate for the EGR you may as well do that too lol

The reason I haven't done it yet is because I can't really touch the engine - could get the call to go up to the maternity unit any moment lol. It will have to wait until I get a chance to look at it.
