Well that was a fun drive home - Niall - 02-07-2012

So went to do some training tonight. Driving out of the car park and grants gone one way, I went the other. 30 seconds later I get a phone call

"can you come and meet me? I think I've f*cked it"
So drive round the corner and before I see him I can smell burnt gearbox oil.....pull over and it's f*cked! Open the bonnet and there's gearbox oil over the front of the box. Take the cover off and the clutch cover is covered in oil along with a nice pile of small bits of metal.

Only 6 miles from his house so I said I'd follow him home..if it gave up completely, I would of used my RAC cover. For the majority of the drive there was smoke coming from the wheel arches and I now feel sick from the smell of burnt box oil.
So just getting round the corner from grants, turn right and I get a nice loud grinding noise and no power steering.
Finally make it to grants and get his car parked up. Well that wasn't too bad!
On my way home, go round a roundabout on the bypass and backend starts to slip out. The roads are wet but I can go round that corner much quicker in the wet! Pull over and I have no power steering at all. Get out and there's a nice spill of power steering fluid around most of the roundabout. Have a look under the car and the ram ha gone pop.

Bollocks.

Thats abit of bad luck mate good time to upgrade to a xsara vts quick rack tho Smile

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Eeyore - 02-07-2012

that sounds like really bad luck! At pugfest I was in sam bates 6 and we did 3 laps... definitely cracked the engine/gearbox mounts and the knocking got worse and worse every corner we took!

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Toby - 02-07-2012

Bad luck mate, I'm free all week and on Saturday and am more than happy to pop up and lend a hand, I'm only just down the road from you guys atm.

Just drop me a call/text/pm.

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - ginge191 - 02-07-2012

the RAM?

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Dum-Dum - 02-07-2012

Yeah...the ram. That's the only power steering part on the rack Ginge....

Scott, if you could pop down and help on Saturday, even if it is just inappropriate comments and winding me up when I throw my tools out the pram, It would be much appreciated.
If anyone else wants to pop down, more than welcome but I don't have much car room!

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Jonny81191 - 02-07-2012

best of luck fixing it mate!

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Scott - 02-07-2012

Of course mate, happy to lend a hand especially since you were up at mine this weekend and didn't get to do anything you'd planned to do!

If I can't help with the rack/ram change then I'll at least help give the car a clean. Preferably while you're under it, as it comes out cleaner when you do it that way. Trust me.

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - ginge191 - 02-07-2012

how on earth did this happen?!?

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Niall - 02-07-2012

Seals gone. It's clearly been like it for a while as the underside was covered in PAS fluid when I bought it.
What's remaining of it must of just gone and when it's sucked in some fluid instead of air, its just blown straight out of the ram seal

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Toby - 02-07-2012

Just remove the PAS system altogether.

Because race car.

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Niall - 02-07-2012

Actually I did consider that. When it stayed PAS'less, it was quite good. Was just dangerous because you could turn into a corner and suddenly gain/loose PAS.

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Grant - 03-07-2012

Lol funny drive home.

Overnight more various parts of gearbox and ores and more oils has collected on the floor outside my house.

Give us shout if you want a hand Saturday mate. I doubt I'll be fixing my car for a while, I'm just gonna ignore it and hope it goes away haha.

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Matt - 03-07-2012

Haha you two are bloody nightmares! Hope it all gets sorted soon Smile

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Niall - 03-07-2012

Need to get in touch with ed first before I can think about repairing it but he's on holiday till god knows when!!

Well that was a fun drive home - Ed Doe - 03-07-2012

Got back last night @ 1am to milford.
Drove with 4 stops (mostly for weewee's, and fuel, and obv the ferry!) From the south of France to Milford; 860miles Big Grin

Wonder how grumpy Fooby would be considering how last time he drove from Newcastle to Grants he spent the whole afternoon in a sulk in his car? /trollingresumes

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Niall - 03-07-2012

FFFUUUUUuuuuu!

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Matt - 03-07-2012

lmao

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - THE_Liam - 03-07-2012

Sorry to hear that lads. Look at it this way though, a gearbox won't even cost £100 and a PAS ram will be far less, imagine what that would cost on my Skoda...

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Grant - 03-07-2012

RE: Well that was a fun drive home - Niall - 03-07-2012

Hope we are. Waiting for mr Doe to text me back to see if I can go and grab it Saturday morning. Road trip?
